Turning Seaweed into a Solution for a Plastic-Free Ocean

We are deeply honored that Seaweedtama Biopac Indonesia (formerly Biopac) was selected as one of the three winners of the US$1 Million Ocean Innovation Prize, presented by the Blue Climate Initiative in collaboration with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Ocean Alliance.

The Prize recognized our vision of using seaweed as a powerful alternative to conventional plastic. Our innovation transforms sustainably sourced seaweed into biodegradable and edible bioplastic through a production process designed to avoid hazardous chemicals while reducing material, energy, and water requirements.

For us, this recognition represents more than an award. It is a validation of our belief that ocean-based resources can become part of the solution to the global plastic and climate crises. By developing seaweed-based packaging—including edible sachets, flexible packaging, and other plastic alternatives—we aim to create practical solutions that help businesses reduce their dependence on conventional plastic while creating value from a renewable marine resource.

The Ocean Innovation Prize has also been an important catalyst in our journey from innovation to commercialization. Since receiving the Prize, our product portfolio and market reach have continued to grow, with Seaweedtama expanding its seaweed-based solutions to include packaging, seaweed-based inks, and other sustainable applications. The Blue Climate Initiative’s impact reporting also highlighted our continued growth, including international customers and the development of additional seaweed-based products.
